Sunday, July 27, 2008 - Decanted 2 hrs and then served in Riedel Burg stems (Vinum). I was a little puzzled actually at the first smell that came from the decanter, couldn’t place it,……fennel! I’ve never had a white wine take on such a pronounced take on the fennel bulb before. With that, we see more familiar mineral notes and an alluring scent of candied, roasted almonds. Though the initial palate impact was soft, things quickly gained speed as a forceful wave of citrus skins gained power and momentum at mid palate, cresting with the saliva glands, and then gently splashing the far reaches of the mouth with a coating Chardonnay richness, almost fat in texture. Simply delicious today, but those in the know seem to think that the real magic of this bottle will be in the years ahead, hopefully I’ll have a bottle or two left to see for myself.
