Saturday, January 1, 2011 - Sat upright for ~2 days prior to opening. The cork was removed in two pieces, and the wine was poured into glasses shortly thereafter with no filtering. We did try using cheesecloth at first, but it really didn't seem to be doing much after the biggest chunks were gone.

Impressively youthful for a 32-year old bottle. Opaque rusty red in the glass with fine black particles throughout. Aromas of dried black cherries and baking spices came and went over time in the glass. Flavors on the palate were much like younger bottlings I've had of this wine - black cherry skins, more spices, subtle smoky oak, and plenty of tart acid, although the tannins were (not surprisingly) undetectable.

The youthfulness of this bottle was striking. In the end, the color and fully-resolved tannins spoke to the age of the wine more than anything else. It seems to have mellowed with age but not really evolved into anything very different at this stage, which I suppose could be taken as a knock against it. Still, drinking this was a great experience and I am looking forward to the other older bottles I've picked up recently.
