92 Points

Saturday, December 22, 2012 - This bottle was superb, as was the case with several other bottles I have had. Bright, crisp, clear, concentrated cherries on nose and palate with very long finish. You would not think this to be 10 years old other than the fact that it is very well integrated and balanced. However, I need to express some dismay over a different bottle (not from my cellar) of this exact same wine. First, the bottle in this current note was serial # 404xxx. The bottle of dismay was in the 950xxx range. This latter bottle (rate as 86) was over oaked and full of phenolics and other less desirable chemical funes. Even after letting it blow off for 30-50 minutes after a serious decant, the high SN bottle never came close to the 404xxx bottle. I am concnerned that the high number bottle was a later bottling from less desirable stock or less desirable aging/storage casks. Unfortunately, the marketing people have added a RP 94 label to all the stock of currently available, which are these hgih SN bottles. This particular wine has been on the retail shelves for ~2 years. The early bottle were truly
outstanding and at a great price. Now, the price is still great, but the wine aint.
