Saturday, June 3, 2017 - Almost completely opaque cherry red color. Heady, opulent and sweet nose with very over-the-top, oak-driven nose of sweet vanilla, blueberry yoghurt, strawberry jam, toasted oak, some pruney plummy fruit and a hint of dill. Full-bodied, weighty and quite concentrated on the palate with high acidity and ample, ripe and chewy tannins. Intense flavors of sweet oak spice, vanilla, ripe cherry, extracted coconut character, some juicy plummy fruit and a hint of dill. Very chewy, mouthfilling mouthfeel. The finish is rich and chewy with some sour cherry bitterness and persistent, intense flavors of vanilla, toasted sweet oak spice, some dried pruney fruit and a hint of strawberry jam.

At over 15 years of age, the wine is still remarkably youthful and very heavy-set with no signs of maturity whatsoever. The intense vanilla oak character feels very pronounced and despite the ripe, concentrated fruit, I can't imagine this amount of oak integrating with the fruit any time soon. Meaning, not at least in couple of decades. The wine is all about cellaring potential, so there is no point opening these in the near future - the pronounced oak character still is the most dominant characteristic, so I can imagine it will take at least 25 more years for this wine to become truly enjoyable. At least the vintage and the denomination "Reserva Especial" signify that this wine is something special and obviously built for the long haul.
