Friday, June 13, 2014 - Coravin 6/13/14: Deep ruby color with very minor bricking, young appearing; nose floats out of the decanter, blackcurrant fruit, blackberry, superbly intense, very complex dusty minerality, flinty gunpowder, some complex secondary characteristics of tobacco, cedar, some delightful green like eucalyptus; palate is still very youthful with initial tannin that moderates through the palate, silky texture, full body, brooding black fruit throughout gives it a core of fruit without being overripe or flashy, nice tart acidity in the midpalate that persists through the medium-long finish. A lovely wine and an example of the best that California can offer, comparable to a first growth bordeaux. Still has many years ahead (at least a decade or two). 95-96+
6/24/14: Opened the remainder. There was a bit of wine collecting at the Coravin entry site. A substantial drop-off from when this wine was first opened, and I'm not pleased. (Bitterness on palate is the main change). This is why I generally try to avoid using Coravin on my best bottles...
