83 Points

Tuesday, January 3, 2012 - A very easy-drinking Burgundy, to the point where it's like something you would call a restaurant vintage: elegant, yes, but no evident structure, no hard edges, no tension. No real breed, either, which makes it a disappointment for a site that can be one of Volnay's finest and most evocative. At $48 it's probably the cheapest Taillepieds I've seen in years but it's still not a value because you can get an experience like this from many a Beaune 1er. There's a lot to like about its elegance but there's nothing else here that holds my interest. There's not even much stuffing--you'd never guess this is from a ripe vintage--with a pale color that's already close to brick and no primary fruit to it, which raises the question whether the elegance reflects a gentle touch or just a dearth of material.
