Tuesday, March 15, 2011 - Rioja Dinner (My Little Spanish Place): A drinkable wine, but not great. Surprisingly, I actually preferred the entry-level Mencos to this wine, which was one step up the quality / price ladder for Conde de Hervias. This had a more reserved nose, darker fruits, prunes, plums, almost plum juice actually, lots of deeply dark scents, and then just a touch of dried chilli flakes, herb and smoke wafting around. With time, some dried flowers scents start to float out of the glass. Pleasant enough. The palate was a bit of a disjoint from the nose though. Lots of fruit here. Where the nose was subtle, the palate showed expressive sweet plums, prunes and dark berries seasoned with a touch of spice at the edges and a touch of tea notes at the finish. Smooth tannins notwithstanding, the acidity was just a bit too low to support all that fruit, so that the wine was a bit flabby at points. Overall, pretty decent drinking, but far from a great wine.
