Thursday, January 23, 2020 - The 90s are a fantastic drinking California decade full of wine treasures. Prior to COVID a small group of us decided to highlight the 97 and 07 vintages. To say the wines performed phenomenally would be an understatement.

This bottle of 97 Insignia by Joseph Phelps was gorgeous. While this definitely shows big Napa fruit and character, there was still a classic elegance shining through. Effortless with beautifully integrated acidity, tannin, alcohol and perfect levels of extraction without being overly ripe or jammy. The sweet tannins of this inky blue / purple saturated Bordeaux blend coated my mouth like Valrhona chocolate covered Louis Vuitton silk sheets! If only I could open this bottle and sleep in it like a genie!

Both the nose and palate show notes of blue and purple fruits, violets and a brilliant combination of creme de cassis / cocoa. It is the single best Insignia I’ve had to date...BRAVO!!!
