91 Points

Sunday, October 16, 2011 - Light gold-yellow. Deeper on the nose than the Davis. Green and red apple, lemon-lime, brown spices, white flowers, and crushed slate. Almost a bit of broth - salty. Enters with lots of lemon and slate, a little lime comes later. Not as laser-focused as the Davis, but fuller. Lots of acid - this wine seems to be operating on two separate levels that aren't quite integrated: the bright lemon acid, and the full (apple?) mouthfeel. Lots of lemon and salty slate on the mid-palate, and the finish is strong and lemony-acid centered. At first I thought I liked this better than the Davis, since it was deeper, but the pieces don't fit together as well. Maybe the bottle has been open too long (27 hrs or so) - so maybe I'll have to try another :) Right now, I like this the least of the three 09 Red Newt Single Vyds - which is saying something. The trio really floats my boat. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 4/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 15.5/20.
