2002 Clonakilla Riesling

Saturday, December 31, 2022 - A glorious 20 year old Riesling with which to see out 2022. Any qualms about the cork were dispelled the moment it was opened. Clean az bro.
Developed deep gold colour. Preserved citrus and stone fruit on the nose - almost baked nectarines with a light honey drizzle. Softly toasty, no petrol sniffing kero characters, thank Buddha.
A beautiful sensual palate. The acids, often so shrill in young a Canberra Riesling, have melded into those citrus/nectarine flavours and the palate’s pillowy texture. Great length and finish.
Fully mature and ready to go for mine. At its best on opening, a few hours later it looked more developed, not as fresh. Almost Auslese (Oz style, mind) like on the nose, while the palate has lost a bit of spring. But that in no way overshadowed the pleasure it gave at the start - a knockout, and delight/relief that the oftentimes treacherous cork had not failed in its one duty to preserve the wine as intended. On this occasion anyway. Makes you wonder how long the 02 might have gone under screw cap…
