Monday, August 31, 2015 - (Decanted for two hours.) This bottle is slightly less closed than the one I had a few months ago. The color is a brooding purple and black. The bouquet, which evolves slowly in the glass, is a beautifully layered assortment of ripe red and black berries, hog jowl, coffee beans, fried fennel, moist earth and a touch of barnyard. Full-bodied, weighty and opulent in the mouth, the rich kirsch, blackberry, plum, beef blood, wild spices, espresso bean and black trumpet mushroom flavors seem animated and amplified. The generous acidity provides additional lift and the huge sweet tannins bristle with energy. There is also mineralité (a distinct iron note) in the firm, focused minute-long finish. In the end, this flat-out masterpiece of a young wine achieves the impossible: all the lush, bigger-than-life parts are knitted into a seamless and harmonious whole. Sadly, it is shutting down.
