Saturday, July 1, 2023 - After 5 years of agonising whether this is a legendary wine or not, and being underwhelmed, at last a bottle which reminds me of why I fell in love with this half a decade ago. This is a behemoth of a wine, and the best pre millennial vintage, with only the 1990 coming close. Possessing an mature aromatic nose, it is deep and complex with blackcurrant, plum and chocolate with floral wafts of violet. The tannin is sweet on the palate with great depth and complexity. Potentially a relatively shorter finish prevents an even higher rating, but it is nit picking. Bottle variation is not an issue with the wine, but just a matter of development. I have a case and half of this in pristine condition, and ironically this bottle was from a couple of very tattered purchases bought below market value. Possibly a lesson; if you are on the wrong side of 60 treat them mean drink them younger! 97+
