Friday, February 14, 2014 - My first experience of both Dom P & of a vintage champagne with this amount of age
I'd taken this out thinking I'd been given a '98 so was extremely excited to see it was in fact the hallowed 1996 but then concerned I was opening this too early.
Straw in colour, initially seemed flat but came to life shortly in the glass
Initial flavours of apple leads to unusual grapefruit note followed by rich toasted bread whose length is pretty long
Undeniably a good champagne but not being particularly much of a champagne fan I'm yet to understand the hype this receives. Thus I've chosen not to score this as it wasn't as hedonistic as many other reviews make it out to be and I derive much greater pleasure from the grapes in their still format
There are obviously many more experienced reviewers here all scoring it well so perhaps a good drop that is wasted on my inexperienced palate or perhaps prior storage conditions haven't been quite suitable and the bottle wasn't showing its best
