Thursday, March 5, 2015 - At 14.9% abv, this monster is popped and pours a beautifully saturated golden color with very long legs. On the nose, the strong alcohol brings forth a rich and full scent of oak and honey. This is supported by a bevy of oats, candied lemon peel, rosewater, Grand Marnier and toasted almonds. On the palate, the wine displays a wonderful structure - potent but not cloying at all. The heat from the alcohol definitely wrestles itself to be acknowledged as soon as it hits the tongue. With it are flavors of marzipan, lemon curd, honeyed nuts, oak and candied roses. Acidity is kept at a low here; but despite that, there is a freshness and minerality to the chardonnay that keeps it lively. Although the finish is of medium length, the wine is very concentrated in both scent and taste. Critics may carp about the lack of complexity in the wine. But to me, this is great juice that shows meticulous extraction and strikes a very good balance between a Cali chard and a white Burgundy.
