95 Points

Sunday, May 14, 2023 - Question: Does a wine need 100 points to be perfect? Emphatically: no! This wine was such a terrific wine to drink with my family tonight. When I first opened this baby, it was a little crusty, grumpy, so I let it breathe in the decanter for about an hour. Wow, did this wine just go from solid to gas!! It had that 1985 loveliness combined with a little rusticity… I mean there was iron, and rustic mineral, combined with dark black and darkest red cherry, an absolute throwback. Enhancing the dark fruit and mineral, green and ripe tobacco leaf, perceptions of loamy earth, soil, and red clay, river gravel, maybe a hint of navel orange, and even a little bit of a floral component at the end. The wine was just so not too big, not too ripe, and this combined so nicely with elegance/rusticity combination, that made a gorgeous, perfect wine begging for food and great family time! I love 1985…
