1985 Château Cos d'Estournel

Saturday, October 3, 2020 - I hope this is not a representative bottle because it is probably the most disappointing Cos I’ve tasted. Cork looked bad, saturated and loose when I inserted the screwpull part of the Durand. Still, the fill was good (base neck) and the color is excellent, Though on the palate there are hints of some madeirization. Nose shows cedar, cigar box, dried cherry and hints of mint. Palate is a bit thin on the fruit with a solid wall of tannins and medium+ acidity. Not bad, but not good for this estate. Blown out of the water by the ‘85 Haut Bages Liberal we had the other night.

10/4/2020 7:47:00 PM - Does not sound like a particularly fresh bottle to me. I have found the 85 to be very classic Cos with clear fruit, plummy earth notes and sweet tobacco. Try another bottle. I have found more variation in the 86 due to ripeness.

10/6/2020 6:21:00 AM - Thanks for your input. I agree (hope) that this is not a representative bottle and that my remaining two will be better. This has been a bit of a "cursed" wine for me since one bottle broke during delivery and then this one underwhelmed. This is my first experience with the '85, so no basis for comparison. As they say, there are no good old wines, only good bottles.
