Thursday, October 7, 2021 - Decanted 45 minutes before tasting. Deep opaque garnet with a rust-colored rim. Complex port-like oxidative nose. Dried cherries, coffee, unsweetened dark chocolate, black pepper, currants, toasted molasses, and a bit of sweet baking spices. A few aggressive swirls coaxes out green leaf aromas from the wine, but they quickly recede. Medium heavy bodied, medium acidity, and there is a bit of a dusty/gritty texture. Palate is a combination of fresh and dried cherries, blackberries, currants, and just a bit of that huckleberry smokiness. Heavy tannins coat and then melt away bringing in the oak flavors of licorice, unsweetened cocoa, and tobacco. Long lasting mineral, dried fruit, cocoa, and espresso finish with burst of acidity that helps pull it together.

This is still a monster of a zin and has the legs to go longer.
