Sunday, February 21, 2021 - I had trouble scoring this because I wanted to be fair. To explain: By pure accident I discovered a bottle of this in a NYC wine shop that is not high end. The bottle was covered in dust and it was warm in the shop. I have no idea how long it had been in there but the wine was only $20 so I thought I'd take the chance. So I think it's fair to say that the storage conditions were way less than ideal. But....the wine still shows fairly well and interestingly, opened up nicely when drunk on a second night. The bottle I had has a medium/dark brown color, what you'd expect from a 50yr old Sauternes. Nose has very pleasant notes of caramel, apricot and petrol. The palate has a bit of cognitive dissonance going on with marzipan and candied peach followed by a bit of lemon zest. Surprisingly, acidity is still lurking in the background, albeit very slight. Clearly the wine was a bit "stewed" but overall the fact that it held up after so long in a not-ideal storage tells me the quality of the fruit selection was quite good. I imagine an ideally stored bottle would score into the 90s.
