Sunday, November 26, 2017 - This wine has blossomed since I last tried it two years ago. In fact, this is one of the best older ones that I have had in several months, and way superior to the “special” wines I brought out for Thanksgiving. It puts a 98 Beaucastl, a 00 Clos du Marquis, a 2001Asilil Produtorri Batabaresco and even a 94 L. De Heredia Tondonia Gran Reserva to shame. The wine is still inky black, with virtually no hints of Browning. The aroma is a heady mix of American oak vanilla flavors, spices, and crushed red berries. But it is on the palate where this winereally stress stuff. It manages to be both user-friendly and structured at the same time: the tannins are sweet and not the least bit angular, but there is enough acidity to keep it from feeling slovenly. Beautiful finish, still significant fruit present, this is what A old-style Rioja is all about !
