Wednesday, January 14, 2015 - Broke my heart as I was expecting something akin to a religious experience based on the many other 2001 Riojas and Riberas I have consumed over the last decade. My favorite vintage in Spain. The 2001's have been nothing short of transcendent and have aged so beautifully. I could tell something was a little off right out of the bottle as the color was more bricky orange-tinged with a whiff of sherried oxidation. The first taste brought home the disappointment with none of the seamless integration of elements I had come to expect. I could taste the age, the breakdown of alcohol and found it flat and uninspired as far as fruit or acid. I left a third of the bottle until the next day, and to its credit, it had improved and I wished I had not been in a hurry and had let it breath for hours in a decanter. It's always a risk with an older wine, but I should have done it. Live and learn, I guess. Still got some '04s from them which is my second favorite vintage in Spain.
