Wednesday, October 10, 2012 - Really nice first time effort for Dutton from this vineyard. The winery's tasting notes for this wine are spot on. Lovely bouquet, that opened up even more when I finished the bottle on the second day. Lighter burgundy on appearance, not the deep color sometimes seen these days in Cali pinots. Smooth, round and consistent mouthfeel and finish. A hint of tannins, yet, with nothing really needing to resolve. Taste plums and cherries, wrapped with what is almost a sweet creaminess. There's a red brightness that is right on the verge of being distracting, but this taste softened as the bottle opened, and was in the right place on the second day. This would suggest that although this wine is drinking well right now, a year or so more laying down would probably bring the wine up a notch. On the other hand, I don't believe this is a wine for long term holding: the structure isn't there. Wait 6-12 months, then drink your next bottle.
