2009 Sanford Syrah

89 Points

Sunday, August 28, 2016 - Realistically this is an 89-90 point wine, but I'm rounding down because someone who couldn't be bothered to explain the score gave it 95, which is ludicrous.

What I enjoy about the SB interpretation of Syrah is that it's a nice summer drinking Syrah. It's a bit lighter on the palate without the extraction. As much as I enjoy southern Rhone syrahs, this really isn't that wine. It's cooler and more elegant. The coolness pervades the wine, bringing red fruit forward with some light aromatic herbs. The finish is fine with tannins that have lent structure through the mid-body but linger fifteen seconds into the finish. I don't think age benefits this wine.

There's not a lot to break down and age risks an unbalanced tartness developing. I think CT actually has the drinking window right on this wine...not to say it won't drink longer, but age isn't going to help it.
