Saturday, June 25, 2011 - An extraordinary wine in every way. The best Insignia Joseph Phelps has ever made and one for the record books. This was my third bottle of this vintage and it has consistently lived up to its "Wine of the Year" billing even as it has aged six years since I first tasted it. The nose has a dense forest floor aroma with soft notes of cedar, all of which hints at extreme depth. On first taste you are hit with an incredible candy spice box that lingers though the mid palate while the dark blackberry fruit, chocolate, and floral oak resonate for eternity. It has lost a hair bit of zest since my first bottle, but shows no sign of slowing down for at least another five years or better. Drink now through 2020.
