Friday, October 4, 2013 - Napa Valley Wine and Food Excursion 2013; 9/30/2013-10/5/2013 (Napa Valley, California): A fleshy, full-bodied blend of 97% Syrah and 3% Viognier, this will not be confused with a Côte-Rôtie. That said, it is a plush, fruit-forward offering which shows that Syrah and Viognier in a New World style can be equally as luscious. Opaque crimson and flaunting an intense nose of blackberries, white flowers, chocolate and smoke aromas, it follows with similar flavors in a frame of low acidity, generous sweet tannins and nicely integrated alcohol (listed as 14.4%). The fruit stays put on the middle and carries through to a medium-to-long, albeit flabby finish. This is a wine which flirts with "outstanding" quality, but falls just a bit short because of its lack of acidity. Drink now-2020.
