94 Points

Monday, January 16, 2023 - The first of my two stray bottles, long past their 'best by' date, as I supposed, pulled from the rack when nothing else was available for a low key dinner of chicken and porcini pie. The colour is promising: dark but bright purple, with little or no sign of age. On the nose - wow! - a surprisingly youthful aroma of violets and fruits of the forest. The palate is wonderful: plush, generous, soft but well-structured, with a whisper of oak and very fine tannins. This is a great pleasure, and far more impressive than bottles I opened at two or three years of age. I haven't previously paid this wine of Perrin's much attention, being distracted by their flashier Hermitage and Cote Rotie. I was wrong! This is a great wine at a much friendlier price. Cork, 13%.

1/16/2023 12:38:00 PM - 24 hours later, the bottom half of the bottle. The aroma and fruit flavours are virtually gone, though the plush texture remains. It's pleasant but unremarkable. When I open the last of my bottles I'll be sure to enjoy it all the first night.
