Monday, June 5, 2023 - The cork held up well, testament to its 30-year tenure. Using the Durand, it uncorked easily. It showed a medium garnet colour that aligns with its age. I let it breathe for about two hours before the first taste, skipping the decanter (but would recommend in order to remove sediment). A red fruit-forward aroma hits the nose first, prominently featuring cherry cola and vanilla. On the palate, it started out with a quick burst of ripe fruit that transitioned swiftly into a savoury mid-palate, echoing notes of leather and a nutty character that lingered. The once sturdy tannins have softened, but there's a surprising amount of fruit that's managed to stay fresh, revealing that this wine still has life in it. It's a typical older wine that needs time to open up, so it's best to taste it in intervals to really capture its essence. It's time to start enjoying this bottle.
