Saturday, June 20, 2020 - Small Tasting of Nieces' Favorites: A wine tasting at my nieces house to compare their favorite wines. The line-up was as follows:

- 2011 Viña Cobos Malbec Cobos Marchiori Vineyard Block C2
- 2012 Caymus Special Selection
- 2016 Carter Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Fortuna Vineyard
- 2016 Quintessa

This The wines were prepared as follows:

2011 Cobos - PnP
2012 Caymus SS - PnP
2016 Carter - Half the bottle was gone from using a Corvin twice earlier (going back 2 weeks) and PnP today
2016 Quintessa - Uncorked the bottle and slo-O'd for 6 hours - reinserted cork for transportation and poured when arrived.

All wines poured at once and drank over the course of 2 hours.

A great line-up! Not surprisingly, everyone had their favorites, and each of the wines in the line-up was someone's WOTN. I did not tally points, so I cannot say which wine was the group's number 1. For me, my WOTN was the 2011 Cobos, followed by the 2012 Caymus SS, then the Carter and 4th was the Quintessa. For me, only one point separated the WOTN from the Quintessa, and I also believe with more time, any of these wines could be number 1. Based on this tasting, I will also say I believe the Quintessa has the most upside.

- 2012 Caymus Special Selection: What can I say....Caymus Rocks! I know this is a polarizing wine and for those who have never had it, know it is heavily extracted with gobs of fruit and chocolate and oak, especially in its youth. At eight years of age, it has mellowed a little, but still distinctly Caymus SS. The nose is sweet and perfumed, and the palate is loaded with rich fruit, chocolate and integrated oak. It is also starting to develop some tertiary nuances with a little dust, cigar and leather, that are velvety smooth. This wine is always a pleasure and a treat for me to drink. It still has a long life, and of all the wines in the line-up, this was the smoothest wine in the group. Always a crowd pleaser and very consumer friendly. A solid 95 today, and my number 2 wine of the group.
