Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - Judging by the other notes I though it was fair enough to open a bottle of this wine. But, as it turns out, it is clearly too young and deserves more time in the cellar. Nonetheless, the class and the allure of Léoville Barton are unmistakeable, even in this less-than-charming 2003 vintage. Very powerful structure with dusty tannins and a solid backbone. The nose remains tight, but it displays already (albeit partially) some of the characteristic aromas of cassis, spices, cigar box, and pencil shavings. It is a bit over ripe, as nearly all 2003 wines are in the Médoc, but it is certainly one of the better ones. It needs at least another 3 years in the cellar to get these tannins to resolve a bit and to let the secondary aromatics develop. From 2014 and until 2020.
