Tuesday, February 1, 2011 - think it was a mistake to open this early without a very lengthy decant. awesome out the gate with gorgeous fruit, silky smooth texture, and room-filling fragrances. but 1/2 hour later had almost completely shut down aromatically. still, the ripe sour-cherry fruit was there, with the hints of flowers, rhubarb, vanilla orange peel and cocoa. great finish but hollow on the mid-palate. there's a subtlety, elegance, and restraint here that i find immensely appealing, especially given it's weight and tannins that just gain in power with each passing hour. but right now it's just not showing enough to really have a sense of who, or what, or how good, it is. noticed that it was better at cooler temperatures. and now, looking over some of the recent notes, i'm pretty sure that ShiverSeeker's post of 1/19/11 hits the nail on the head. so read that. i, for one, am definitely going to wait those other couple of years, and then some. we'll see. right now, i'd probably give this a 92. but something tells me it could be a 95+ under the right conditions, somewhere down the road. so i'm going to leave it scoreless for now....
update: at it's best, now, almost 5 hours after initial opening. too bad only a couple drops left.
