Saturday, July 29, 2006 - A tasty wine that those used to drinking cheap, oaky California zinfandel or Australian shiraz would undoubtedly like. Apart from it’s oakiness and almost syrupy texture and structure, it’s a nice wine. There are penetrating blueberry notes. There is also plenty of French oak. The texture is soft, supple, and velvety. Judged completely independently of the terroir, it’s a very good wine.
However, it tastes nothing like Brunello. It was served blind, and I suspected that it might be a syrah or perhaps merlot, or perhaps some strange California-styled Super Tuscan. I congratulate Siro Pacenti on making a Brunello that tastes like merlot. Congratulations on completely suppressing any characteristics of Sangiovese Grosso and the Montalcino terroir.
