Sunday, June 23, 2019 - As the comments below indicate, 2003 was volatile vintage for G la R. I drank my first bottle two months ago, and it was clearly oxidised. This bottle from the same merchant in the same shipment is wonderful. Totally opaque deep plum colour; a slightly (but not unattractive) heavy nose of bright earthy fruit; perhaps a little unyielding across the palate but this is compensated by this chateaux's typically generous fruit. Above all, it has good mouthfeel and staying power (longueur), that gives full expression to the smoky-bright fruit that is so characteristic of La Rose, although exactly what it is I can't quite put my finger on. I wonder if it is not a fruit at all, but something else, a certain cut of rare beef or perhaps liquorice. This is a big wine, very solid, but I think it is probably at its peak now.
