Friday, June 27, 2014 - Quilceda is one of those wines which always triggers a "love or hate" response from experienced wine aficionados. The nose is so Quilceda I am totally amazed. The green, grassy tone adjoined by serious mint tells me what is in the glass. There is some serious fruit too. Deep, profound and clean red berries, blackberry and classy ballpoint pen are adjoined by perfect oak and a lovely complexity. The palate is fully packed and the balance is incredible. The structure is amazing. This wine will last for many many years if taken care of properly. The length on the finish lasts for more than a minute and adds to the keywords "amazingly good!"... I find no flaws at all in the wine, but it certainly is a Quilceda. Personally I find the green mint tone a bit difficult, but my personal taste has actually very little to do with the objective stunning qualities of this wine. (Hence, it deserves a close to perfect score tonight.) A true gem! (score is 98+)

I tasted this wine some 18 months ago and it has certainly developed since then. This wine might be a perfect wine to me in the future given this development. Tannins are e.g. much more integrated and well-behaved now compared to the last tasting.

(Tasted in a flight with 2001 Shafer Hillside Select, 2001 Napa Valley Reserve, 2002 Quilceda Creek and 2007 Hundred Acre Precious.)
