Thursday, November 27, 2014 - Bordeuax 2003 horizontal tasting with Pichon L, Mouton R, Cos d’Estournel and Margaux. All were excellent and in good condition, but there were striking differences. My wife and I had the wines with duck confit and mushroom Risotto, finishing with fresh Manchego cheese. The Cos was, surprisingly, the least impressive. It was fruity, round, but one dimensional, with little in the way of a finish. About a 92. The Pichon was next, with a bit of spice on the front end, with good red fruit, and a nice finish. Not spectacular, but very good. About 94. The Mouton was a surprise, given what I had read about it. It was really good, deep red fruits, long mid palate with earthy tones, and a long finish. This had been decanted for about four hours, so maybe that helped. About 96. The star of the evening was the Margaux. Right off the bat, complex red fruits with spices and earthy notes, mid palette of deep dark fruit, very long and satisfying finish. This is what makes Bordeaux so great. We tasted a very good California cab right after, and it seemed thin and one-dimensional. Give it a 98. Wow.
