Sunday, February 4, 2024 - Chunky crust. Deep red.
Sweet Shiraz fruit nose, with a nice vanillan oak lift.
This huge wine, reflective of 2012 and Clare, has now all come together to show almost lolly sweetness, though entirely from the aged fruit characters, which with breathing shows quite wonderful balance. I chuckled at my comment from 2017 that you could use it to push over old dead trees. Perhaps you need to visit the Clare Valley or at least rural South Australia to appreciate that crazy observation. The power is now wrapped in velvet with a cherry on top. An absolute classic aged SA Shiraz from a good year. Not subtle and delicate. Not with the elegance of Eden Valley. A powerhouse with the corners worn off. It would be considered old fashioned today, but I’m a fan, alongside the best cool climate Aussie Shiraz and the best from the Northern Rhone. It cost me AUD19 in 2014… Hard to beat.
