2003 Château Léoville Las Cases

Community Tasting Note

Does not like this wine:

74 Points

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 - Modern yuckiness; this combines red fruit and eucalyptus oil and finishes with a hint of ashtray. The eucalyptus oil stays on the lips for quite a while after the sip.

5/22/2013 7:53:00 PM - Alex, bottle is not flawed. Also, it has a perfect storage history since I bought it en premier as futures. Granted, I generally do not like modern(ish) wines, and have been very disappointed in 2003 Bordeaux. But, I did really enjoy the Calon Segur 2003 that was ordered, delivered on the same day, stored right beside the LLC in the same box and drunk on the same day years later. The LLC just had all of the markers of overripe, over made, spoof that has high price, high points, high pedigree, and in the end just ain't that good. TOO ME!

But at least you didn't disdainfully call me a Southern Cheesecake Factory lover with a bad palate, so we can have a civil discourse. Tell you what, I was going to sell the rest of my bottles, but I'll pull a cork on another one just to see if second bottle is better than first.

5/23/2013 6:42:00 PM - Sand, you caught me off guard. The darn wine tasted like something one might get from the cheesecake factory. At any rate, the wine was surely overripe. It also had an oily astringency that I used to get with too much of the spoof I used to buy and chase. You can find plenty of notes of mine lauding this type of wine a few years ago. That is why I don't think it is flawed because it has so much in common with so many other wines like it. I think this is just how the wine is supposed to taste. Further, I could get this down, say, if I was on a deserted island or something.
