89 Points

Tuesday, April 12, 2011 - For current enjoyment, I have to rate 89, but potential is definitely 95+. This was a half-bottle that we decanted for 20 minutes. After decanting and being in the glass for some time, I still had to focus hard to get much from the nose. It was very restrained, but gave some mild black licorice, blackberry and currant as well as a raw root vegetable character with some cinnamon. The palate was extremely rich with huge structure, but the acidity was almost masked by the very firm tannins. The existing fruit was tart cherry and plum with underlying cocoa. Certainly an enjoyable bottle, but I think that the acid will hold up the fruit flavors and bring it forward in another year or two and allow the dryness to settle.
