Saturday, September 27, 2014 - Though initial nose was a bit stinky, surprised on the palate with more minerality and acid than I'd expect from Ribera del duero. Next few hours were not so pleasant - extremely stemy, like a whole bunch's worth of stems and four grapes. Then in one of those magical wine moments, three or four hours after opening, the nose took on the exact smell of the Dutch masters my grandfather used to smoke and the ashtray by his fireplace. The palate had improved, too, becoming mulchier and livelier, with graphite minerality and a nice little kick of acid to keep it somehow refreshing. In the end this was not a great wine, but it certainly does have "complexity" and it was an interesting contrast to the bolder examples I identify with this appellation.
