Thursday, May 4, 2023 - Drank over 4 days—
This wine surprised me considerably. Before opening, I worried it might be over the hill—tired at the very least—but it was far from either. Even at twenty-six years old it had barely begun to develop tertiary characteristics. The nose showed red and black cherry, strawberry, licorice, all spice, and sweet herbs. There was just a hint of what I take to be forest floor.
The palate was similarly exuberant—red fruit and spice with good depth and concentration. The wine certainly didn’t feel like it was a quarter of a century old.
The acid was strong, as were the tannins. In fact, if I had more, I would wait a few years before trying it again to see if the tannins recede at all.
I bought this bottle thinking it was a chance to taste aged grand cru Burgundy. I can see why writers like Meadows and Gilman suggest waiting so long—
