Thursday, June 18, 2015 - Strong notes of violets on the nose followed over time by some Cabernet Franc-like dustiness. Medium-full body, fleshy, with round tannins and medium-high acidity. There is initially a strong ferrous mineral undercurrent on the palate that is joined by some notes of dust and bell pepper; then notes of violets become more noticeable over time together with some blueberry jam sweetness and perhaps a hint of leather (which is probably what my girlfriend associated with "funkiness") -- so this is perhaps somewhat like a fleshy Chinon mixed in with a little Malbec...
A very quaffable and versatile red which would go excellently with a Zuni chicken (http://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1015770-zuni-cafe-chicken), or -- and here's a twist -- with a dish involving red pepper flakes. A true steal in France where apparently it retails for under $10!
12.5% ABV.
