Sunday, December 26, 2021 - Bought at auction (Blomquist) in 2020.
APPEARANCE: The cork broke in two as soon as I gently started to open it. Heavy, solid deposit (as expected) which was easily decanted away. Medium garnet colour. Viscous. Long slow legs on the inside of the glass.
NOSE: Strawberry jam, plum, prune, fig, raisins, hints of sweet tar and licorice. Later tea and rose hip. Moderate intensity of smell which increases over time. (89p)
TASTE: The arrival is sweet, with luscious plum and some liquorice. On the mid palate typical port minerality or spice, assorted jams (plum, strawberry, fig), nice acidity and some rounded tannins. Closer to full than medium body. (88p)
FINISH: A bit simple finish with a slightly burnt bitter touch to it. (85p)
OVERALL: Significantly better on day two after opening (based on its day one appearance I would have scored it around 82-83 points. Alive but less vibrant and impressive than when I last tried it in 2012 (at a Symington tasting, 95 points). Given how others report this wine to still be in top shape and the auction provenance of my bottle, I think this may suffer from less than ideal previous cellaring. TOTAL SCORE: 87 points.
