Friday, January 2, 2009 - New Year's Weekend @ Rob & Lisa's; 1/1/2009-1/4/2009 (Scott's Valley, CA): Dense blackberries, dark cherries, and spice on the nose. I have found with the couple of Botella bottles that I have had that there is a green-ness or woodiness to the taste that takes a good couple hours to subside. I think they go a little overboard on the oak in order to compensate for the lower quality grapes. It's not really offputting, but it definitely puts a damper on this otherwise very well made wine. This is one of the oldest Sea Smoke wines that I have had (although that's not saying much), and having a few additional years on this definitely helps to bring together the big bold fruits that can overwhelm these wines in their youth. Very well balanced and structured, but I just never found anything in here that got me excited.
