Thursday, November 5, 2015 - We had a serious adventure last night. We had read about and decided to visit a French “private kitchen” (Cafe F39) run by a Hong Kong Chinese couple who lived in France for 30 years and returned to their home village in the countryside. The third floor of their village house is dedicated to serving a small number (no more than 12) diners. Two days advanced booking and the Chef will prepare pretty much any French dish you want. Fine French food in the countryside of Hong Kong…does it get any better!?

Ha, what is Foie Gras without Yquem? A day without sunshine we said, which brought a smile to the Chef's face. This stunning barely legal baby demonstrates the best that can be achieved when the French, non-Kiwi version of Sauvignon Blanc meets the structure of Semillon. Amazing balance between sweetness and acidity that fellow CTer Greg Munyard quite correctly and succinctly calls lip-licking. It is very near to impossible to say more except we enjoy the citrussy petrol on the nose along with the smooth candy-like expression on the palate. We visited a few years ago, we learned how they make it happen and we pay homage to the people who deliver, only when the harvest is perfect, this glorious Sauternes with top-shelf consistency. Sadly, one finds it difficult to venture far afield from THE definition of this type of drop...which ain't inexpensive! Rocking 'n rolling!
