Monday, December 8, 2008 - This is my first bottle of Gruaud Larose ever, on the occasion of my birthday, to accompany a meal of USDA choice New York strip steaks with sauteed mushrooms. Upon opening there was an immediate strong, briary nose of plum, currant, cigar box, licorice, and tar. The initial palate featured somewhat tart red and black currant, quickly overtaken by strong, chalky tannins. This was then double-decanted over 2'45". Now the chalkiness was resolved. The nose, too, as also noted below, was softened and less briary. The palate was now a nicely balanced, complex blend of dark fruits, pepper and other spices, cigar box, tar and leather. As this was then consumed over the next 90 minutes it became progressively softer and somewhat flattened. A very interesting experience for my wife and I. We both were "wowed!" by this, my wife from start to finish, while I was most impressed from about the 2-3.5-hour mark. My only bottle of this, it may be worthy to pick up some more.
