94 Points

Saturday, June 27, 2015 - Another bottle with a low neck fill, this wine had a red/purple center with some orange at the rim. I might have guessed a '95 from the color. The nose was quite serious at first showing crushed raspberries, violets and minerals. After it aired for a few hours the nose rounded out and was of medium+ intensity. Mocha and brown spice flavors surged into the forefront and pushed the aforementioned flavors into the background.

In the mouth, this wine was ripe and rich as befits the '82 vintage. Yet, while the mouth-feel was ripe and round with moderate tannin, the flavors were so intense they assaulted your tongue. The mineral flavors dominated in the mouth for the first couple hours. After that, it rounded out further but it still never lost that dry, inky intensity.

I have had this wine many times but I don't remember it having this dry intensity 5-10 years ago. It is not really a crowd pleaser and more of a showpiece for serious winos only. However, it has enough fruit that it could mellow out in 5-10 years and add a point or two. It is just tough to tell where it is going.
