Wednesday, December 13, 2017 - This could not be more different from my last bottle a year or two ago. That one still had the aggressive, raw American oak. It's now barely noticeable, amazingly enough. What happened to the fruit is equally surprising, as it's gotten very backwards and structured, more like cabernet than the plump fleshiness one usually associates with merlot. Lacking primary sweetness, the minerality has come to the foreground and it is intense, full of iron and rock-quarry evocations, so VERY Santa Cruz Mountains - reminds me of some of the great Mount Eden cabernets.
