Friday, December 25, 2020 - Pulled w/o consulting CT and my previous note which said to hold 4-9 years 2 years ago, based on phenolic substance and fresh acids. If anything, the limestone/shale minerality was more pronounced this time, esp. on the nose, with lemony citrus and a bit of butterscotch/spice, hazelnut, and subtle stone fruit. The palate is showing less fruit character on the back end, and less edge/definition such that the finish feels shorter, but there's a mineral echo that lasts forever. Overall, I agree that this has lost some energy in the past couple of years, but it is not really a lesser wine so much as an older one. It performed well at the table with chestnut soup, and with a rich crab risotto with truffle and lemon, served @~cellar temp, and I think a younger or too cold Chardonnay from anywhere would have competed more than complemented. This Alpine might be better still in a couple more years hoping for similar mineral effusiveness and a touch less oak. It's maturing a bit faster than I thought but that's what it's doing.
