90 Points

Sunday, December 30, 2012 - 90-91 pts with some bonus points for the age on it. Not a terribly complex wine but solid for the price. Pretty expressive nose after the initial pour with macerated black cherries and currants. Certainly had the character of an older wine on the palate with the black cherry fruit having a rather meaty character to it. Incredibly chalky tannins at first that hid some other components but with some aeration the wine developed some more character.

At its best the wine contained a really pleasing meaty black cherry, generous cacao and mint all rolled up on the mid-palate. There wasn't much if any elegance here, but it had a pleasing nature to it nonetheless. With extended aeration it developed some other characteristics of blackberry, black currant, hints of cola and at one point hinted of wet fallen leaves. Unfortunately the wine lacked any real focus to express anything harmoniously but that was to be expected given the price. Only the mint and cacao was persistent for any period of time.

Overall, a tasty but inelegant wine that certainly benefited from the age. The tannin and acid are there but I'm not so sure that it will ever come together in a composed way. At peak maturity right now and possibly the next 3-5 years. I don't imagine it will get much better so enjoy now.
