Tuesday, December 8, 2015 - WWS Price/Preference Smackdown (blind tasting) (White Plains, NY): Drank blind at WWS tasting alongside a 1998 version, as well as a Clos Du Val meritage that many of the tasters preferred (though I cannot fathom how or why). This wine is still an opaque purplish color. Nose was a bit medicinal and off-putting at first, but that burned off quickly revealing black fruit and cedar aromas. Lots of dark fruit here, along with coffee and mocha. The wine definitely has that merlot softness, but still has quite grippy tannins so it may be difficult for some to get past that. Interesting to drink alongside the wonderfully-drinking 1998 as that wine--hopefully--represents this version's future. I would lay this wine down for another few years before revisiting, though quite tasty currently if you can get past the tannins. Definitely decant!
