Friday, June 8, 2007 - This was quite a bit different and even better than the bottle I noted in January. For the record, this was the Kacher bottling. Medium color with only minimal brown at the rim. The aroma started with clove and black fruit, then developed more fragrant spices including nutmeg without the more typical herb notes. This reminded me of the "Asian spice box" aromas of some great Burgundies. Ripe strawberries appeared as it evolved. The balance was lovely, especially for a '98, with medium weight, complex fruit, and acidity and tannin to provide structure. This showed much younger than the last bottle and was an absolute delight to drink tonight. The Brunel Centenaire may be the trophy wine, but this is a gem in the universe of regular, unadorned Chateauneuf.
