Saturday, June 6, 2015 - Medium-dark rosewood color with red brick hue. At first this has an intense nose of espresso and sous bois. The palate - by contrast - is initially quite subtle and linear, with faint blue fruit flavors easing into a smooth midpalate, ending with a tiny bite of woody tannin. Crestfallen, I assumed this was five to ten years past its prime. Once it was allowed to breathe a bit this wine really bloomed. The nose began to take on varied scents of rose petal, fresh tobacco, graphite and beef blood. The palate filled out, with flavors of black fruit and licorice, retaining the piquant finish of cedar wood at the back of the mouth. This is gentle but fascinating wine; not a transcendent experience but a pleasure to drink now or next year.
